Final Day
Today was my last day of the internship this summer, and I'm not going to lie: I'm glad I'm done. Not that I didn't enjoy my experience there because I really did. 30 hours of overtime and programming 11 full hours a day is no walk in the park no matter how much you enjoy it. If I see another exception or technical error I'm going to have a seizure! I officially won't be telecommuting, since the last of the important changes are almost finished and it's a mountain of hassle and paperwork to approve. Oh well!

I wish I had something more exciting to say about my last week other than it has been packed full with ooey gooey java-ness. Ugh... so glad I can ignore java and return to my true love C#. I'm also looking forward to getting back into a normal sleeping routine of getting up at 11am and going to bed at 2am. God I miss that! If you are a prospective intern reading this, or just want more detail then feel free to use my contact page to ask any questions.

Bye State Farm, T'was fun.

Bittersweet Symphony
Today was a very bittersweet day in our collaborative room. Since it was my intern buddy's last day, and since mine is coming up next Friday, the whole team brought in food for a sort of suprise party and we pigged out all day. They even had a cake made for us that said "Good Luck Neith and Tyler" which was really nice of them. I guess I hadn't realized until today how close I have gotton to everyone, and how sad it will be to leave them all. When it was finally time for my intern buddy to leave, she started crying when she was thanking everyone for helping her and making her feel so welcome. I almost started crying too, not gonna lie. I might when it's my turn to leave, but then again by the time next Friday rolls around I'll be so burnt out that it just might keep me from tearing up.

On a happier note, I had a meeting with the Iowa recruiters today that went very well. I finally got approval to ask for letters of reccomendation since it is against the company policy, but since it's for academic advancement they will actually let me do it. Thank god, I didn't know who I was going to ask since I'm not very close to any of my professors. Also, they told me to talk to my manager about possibly telecommuting for work during the school year. Apparently no other intern has ever telecommuted outside of their research center, and it's very tough to get approval. They said I might have a pretty good chance since they're already keeping me a week late and my project just got an additional $300,000 funding for the rest of the year. Also, the stuff I've been working on is requirements from the biggest project at State Farm which has a lot of power to pretty much do whatever it wants, so there would be a strong business case for me to do it. That would be awsome to code from school, I really hope I can do it, but I shouldn't get my hopes up since it is such a feat.

Workaholic
So I've always known I'm a bit of a workaholic, but I've always though that's ok while I'm young and don't have a family. My project manager asked me today if I'd be willing to work 30 hours overtime until I leave here next Friday. I said sure why not. I like the fact that they value my work and want to squeeze every last bit that they can get out of me (aha, get it? bit! Binary...) anyways I'm hoping I can help this guy get these tasks done before I go. I feel kind of bad for him because they brought him in a couple of weeks ago and gave him two of the top three critical pieces to work on by himself and said that they pretty much wanted it all done now. We almost have the first piece working but the second one hasn't really even been talked about yet. I told him I'd help him work on it next week so he doesn't feel completely rushed.

On top of working one additional week and overtime, housing for that final week is still up in the air. One of my friends scared the hell out of me when he said we had to find our own housing for the week. I talked to the systems intern coordinator and she doesn't really even know what's going on yet besides the fact that State Farm is paying for it. It might be nice to know wether I'm going to have to move or not seeing as that would all come into play this weekend. They could have been a little bit more organized and figured all of this out before they offered an extended stay. Not that I'm ungreatfull for being able to work for them an extra week. So that will be my complete life for the next couple of weeks, work work work. Can't wait to head back to Iowa City!
